What is a Pediatric Dentist?
Just like family and general dentists, our pediatric dentist, Dr. Patel, completed four years of dental school. This was followed by two years of residency dental training to help better meet the needs of younger patients, such as frightened toddlers and fidgety teens. In addition to her ability to deliver specialized services for the very young, Dr. Patel can help your teens understand the importance of maintaining adult teeth through a healthy diet and good dental habits. She’s always willing to discuss topics like oral piercings, wisdom teeth, the use of tobacco (smoked or chewed), and other issues unique to teens.
Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist?
By choosing a pediatric dental specialist, you increase the likelihood that your child will learn to feel comfortable in a dental chair and learn lifelong healthy dental habits. It’s never too early (or too late!) to start dental care with our children’s dentist. We look forward to your first call and all of those that follow through our long relationship!
Dr. Patel is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association. She is proud to be the community pediatric dentist.
Exams and Cleanings
Evaluate your child’s oral hygiene, checking for sores or bumps in your child’s mouth, and removing deposits or stains on the teeth. Your child’s tooth eruption history, eating and drinking habits, pacifier use and thumb sucking will be reviewed. Also, will evaluate whether your child is getting adequate fluoride and may recommend a fluoride supplement.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride acts by delaying the onset of tooth decay.
It’s even capable of reversing early tooth decay.
It protects dental enamel from deterioration.
It also keeps cavity-causing microorganisms away from your teeth.
As a result, fluoride can help to keep teeth healthy and cavity-free.
Sealants
Dental sealants are extremely thin coatings that are painted onto the chewing surfaces of the teeth. As the sealant dries, it bonds into the nooks and crannies of the teeth to create a protective shield over the dental enamel. This shield prevents food particles from getting into the tooth surface and, therefore, prevents tooth decay.
Sedation
Because children find it difficult to sit through a dental treatment, particularly one that involves discomfort, our downtown pediatric dental practice offers two options for a more comfortable experience: nitrous oxide and oral sedation. Beginning at the age of 2 years, parents can choose one of these two options for fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions or other treatments. Endorsed by the American Dental Association, sedation is an effective way to make children comfortable.
Silver Diamine Fluoride
Silver Diamine Fluoride therapy is a non-invasive tooth decay treatment technique.
SDF is a topical antibacterial and remineralizing agent that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2014.
The goal is to halt the progression of tooth decay before it causes more damage to the tooth structure.
However, the use of SDF does not eliminate the necessity for dental fillings or crowns to restore function or appearance.
Digital X-rays
Our pediatric dentist will take digital x-rays of your child’s teeth to help her view your child’s present teeth and the teeth that will erupt in the future. Digital x-rays help to identify cavities, diagnose bone disease in the jaw, detect orthodontic problems, and to examine the teeth and surrounding bones and tissues in cases of injury or trauma. The use of digital x-rays eliminates chemicals or waste and also to magnify the x-rays to better understand each child’s dental needs.
